SECURITY ALERT – THEFT BY TRICKSTER
Campus Security had received several reports of theft of hand phones, wallets and laptops involving a trickster in late 2009. This is in addition to the Security Alert sent out in Dec 2009.
2. The latest case was reported on 14 March 2010. In most of these cases, the victims were studying at the open areas of the Faculty of Engineering, when they were approached by male Malay who told them that they needed to fill up their water containers at a certain floor as the water they had was dirty. The said subject assured them that he would look after their belongings in their absence, and the victims innocently believed him and left to refill their containers accordingly. However, upon returning, they found their belongings missing and the male subject had also disappeared.
3. The suspect is a male Malay, dark complexioned, aged between 40 and 50 yrs, about 1.67 meters tall and plump built. He was spotted with medium length hair with a round face and was usually clad in T-shirt and dark pants. He was also spotted wearing a white cap and had a white pouch around his waist.
4. We would like to advise all staff and students not to leave their belongings unattended or allow strangers to guard them. You are encouraged to report strangers who behave suspiciously anywhere in NUS Campus to our Campus Security hotline at 6874 1616 (or 65163636 for Bukit Timah Campus), or call Police direct at 999. Please remember: DO NOT hand over cash or other valuables to strangers. If the said male Malay subject is spotted, please do not confront him but call our Campus Security hotline immediately.
Thank you.
