GE after August possible: George Yeo

CHIANG RAI (THAILAND): Foreign Minister George Yeo continued to put forward a possible timeframe for Singapore's next general election, this time saying it could also be held after the presidential elections, which are due in August.

He had earlier guessed that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong would call a general election in the second quarter, after the Budget session.

'Presidential elections will be in the third quarter. SM Goh (Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong) said a key decision to make for the Prime Minister is whether to have a general election before or after the presidential election,' he told Singapore media during his Asean road trip. He added: 'I told my grassroots that we should be prepared from the end of March onwards, after the budget debate. I think the most likely window will be the second quarter of this year.

'If it's not the second quarter, then it will be after the presidential election, because you can't have the two together. It will confuse the issues in people's minds, but this is - I'm not speaking from inside knowledge - something the Prime Minister has to decide and it's something he will decide at the appropriate time.'
