It was presumptuous of PM Lawrence Wong to claim that the S'pore Dream is no longer about past definitions of success such as cash, car, credit card, condo and country club membership. It is not that most S'poreans no longer desire these 5Cs, but that almost 90% cannot afford to have them! How can PM Wong claim to build a country where every S'porean matters when a staggering 95% of jobs created in 2023 and 89% in 2022 went to foreigners?

In the 1990s, a general degree holder's starting monthly salary of around $1,500 was not enough to obtain a credit card. With a $30,000 annual income requirement, finally getting that card was a significant milestone. During those days, country clubs were being torn down to make way for public housing, thereby making golf a sport for only the wealthy. At that time, larger companies provided free cars to senior managers as part of their compensation, which is a practice that is no longer practical. In the current economic climate, cash is the most effective tool for achieving financial independence, enabling early retirement. Most PMEs are cautious about purchasing a condo, arguing that with prices no longer below $1 million and the risk of job retrenchment for PMEs more likely after 45, taking on a large mortgage is too risky for most S'poreans.

In the west, gen Z's have given up partying and alcohol probably for same reason.

last time, no CDC, 5C still within reach if work hard, now even work very hard, may not reach

Goh Chok Tong promised S'poreans a Swiss Standard of Living.
LHL and PM LW tell us to be content with just the Swiss Cost of Living.

I wonder why. Ramesh and all his CECA friends own condos and cars.
Former NMP Calvin Cheng claimed that S'poreans’ frustration with new SG citizen Ramesh Erramalli’s high pay is borne out of jealousy. The former CECA said: "I buy your fucking property for $1.5 million you know ...... we’re not staying in a HDB you know?”
