SINGAPORE: Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Chan Chun Sing, has given the assurance that there will be no overspending for the 2015 SEA Games that the country will host.

The minister told this to media after revealing details about the Games’ Steering Committee.

Mr Chan, who chairs the Committee, said it will comprise members from all sectors of society.

The Committee has a good mix of people from the private, public and people sectors.

More details are still being ironed out, including the budget, the number of sports and even the Games Village.

Also being considered is the possibility of setting up a separate fund to help the Singapore athletes train earlier and better for the big event.

Two dates are being considered for the event, one in June 2015 and the other in November that year.

Mr Chan reiterated that all this will be done within budget.

"We are keeping a very tight watch over the entire budget. Unlike the YOG, the SEA Games is very different. In YOG there are various contractual things that we have to abide by, but for the SEA games itself we have greater control of the choices of vendors and the kind of things that we want to use for the Games," said Mr Chan.

"We are quietly confident that we’ll have much greater control over the entire budget," he added.

This will be the fourth time that Singapore is hosting the event.

Previously it was staged in 1973, 1983 and 1993. In the last edition, more than 4,000 athletes competed in 29 sports and host Singapore won a record 50 gold medals.

So if overspend, how?

The budget has not even been finalised and they make this statement. They will now provide a budget with a big buffer and then come back say they saved alot. This is pretty much engineered.

give 3 times the original budget.. wont overspend liao.

Kee Chiu should just STFU and use what he likes. Look at VB & YOG, wasted so much but still drawing his bonus every month.

Chee Chiu just come out with this statement to sarbo Vivian the Chindian lah. Its just a dig at him. The budget is not so simple. YOG was budgeted for $150 million in 2010 dollars, which they exceeded to the tune of $300 million. And that was supposedly an international event. Since SEA is only a regional sporting event, he has to explain to the public if the budget exceeds $150 million. This will be a hot potato for him. If he tries to save his backside by deliberately putting in a budget with fat in it (in case he exceeds the real budget), people will rightly question why the budget is higher than the YOG original budget.

If he propose a huge budget for seagame should not be a big problem, if not from now to 2015 it a long way he can't estimate how much will it cost.

propose a budget of $1 billion... spend $800 million, then come out and say save $200 million... wah.. hero, sia! Kee Chiu!

PAP scums are good liars..

Not even one of them can be trusted with their words and promises..

Lies, Cover-up, and deception.. They are bloody good in all of these traits..

PAP has shown that they don't know the word budget when it means $$$ in their own pockets. Anyone remember the youth olympic games;)

With their sticky fingers I doubt they can resist the temptation of looting from a project like the SEA games:confused: It will also be embarrassing if the world sees the failures of the MRT trains, floods in Orchard Road,... or who knows what else is going to breakdown or fail:rolleyes:

I second that. Chinese officials learn this trick from the PAPpies. Or is it the other way round?
