THE world's first oral medication for the treatment of premature ejaculation has been approved for use in Singapore.

Premature ejaculation, or PE, is believed to be one of the most common male sexual health problems globally, according to Janssen-Cilag.

It is a recognised medical condition characterised by short ejaculatory latency time and lack of control.

In Singapore, 20 per cent of men suffer from PE, while another 14 per cent are probably sufferers of the condition.

A new medicine called Priligy has recently been approved here for the treatment of PE for men between 18 and 64 years of age with symptoms such as latency ime of less than two minutes, persistent or recurrent ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation, personal distress and poor control.

The medicine is an oral tablet that can be taken approximately one to three hours prior to engaging in sexual activity.

Priligy was tested in a clinic trial in Asia Pacific, where participants, including Singaporeans, received either 30 or 60mg of Priligy for 12 weeks.

After the trial, it was found that men who were on the dosages were less distressed about their speed of ejaculation.

Initially, about 73.5 per cent of them were 'quite a bit' or 'extremely' distressed and by the end of the study, only 25.2 per cent felt the same.

The drug will be available in Singapore from mid-March next year and is available by prescription only.:D:D
