A panchayat (village council) in Bihar, north India, has banned the use of handphones by unmarried girls, saying it was the main cause of social problems in the village.
There would be heavy fines on their families if they violated the order, said the council, which made the decision during a meeting on Tuesday.
Tamil Nesan quoted village head Zakir Ansari as saying the decision was taken with approval of hundreds of villagers.
> Makkal Osai reported that a gold chain was recovered from a thief after police made him eat eight dozen bananas.
Apparently, the man had swallowed the chain after snatching it from a doctor on board a train on Dec 22.
Mumbai police said Bandra resident Kamble was travelling in the Vidarbha Express when Damu Gupta, 28, snatched the chain she was wearing and ran off.
Alarmed by her cries for help, fellow passengers chased Gupta and caught him in another train compartment.
He vehemently claimed innocence and the passengers could not find the chain on him.
But another traveller said he had noticed Gupta swallowing something.
An ultrasound confirmed that the chain was in Gupta’s stomach. He was fed bananas on the doctor’s advice.
