Teen admonished for faking news of Lee Kuan Yew's death

A Singapore teenager was sternly admonished for posting a news release on the death of former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew before the founder of the country had actually passed away.
The teen, whose name cannot be released because he is under 16 years of age, used a logo of the Istana, Singapore's presidential office, to make his false press release look more credible on March 18.
After an investigation, Singapore's Attorney-General's Chambers said Tuesday that the boy had been given a severe warning in the presence of his parents for violating the telecommunications law.
The Chambers quoted the boy as confessing that he was not satisfied with the wild circulation of rumors about Lee's death and wanted to prove to his friends how easy it is to spread rumors on the internet.
He sent a message to his friends just two minutes after his false news release had been posted, but by that time, the fake news release had already been widely quoted.
Some Taiwanese media and even CNN were duped into carrying the message. The boy told investigators that he was repentant.
The Singapore authorities decided to let him off with a stern warning, taking into account the boy's personal situation and his willingness to accept responsibility.
Lee died March 23 aged 91, five days after the fake news about his death.
The Singapore government officially released the news March 23 on the Istana website in the form of President Tony Tan Keng Yam's condolences to Lee's son Lee Hsien Loong, the incumbent prime minister, and his family.
