THE National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is spending way more on its patients than it collects in donations, and might need to dig into its reserves to get through this year.
With three patients added to its roll every week, its patient pool now stands at 2,690, about 600 more than in 2006, when new management took over the reins following a corporate governance scandal.
In 2006, donations amounted to $43.3 million. Last year, it collected $18.5 million, way short of the $50 million a year it needs to run operations. Its investment income has also fallen, from $15.4 million in 2006 to $6.6 million last year.
