Nine arrested for drink-driving
SINGAPORE: Nine motorists were arrested for drink-driving in a pre-dawn operation on Saturday.
Forty-eight drivers were stopped and tested for alcohol consumption at road blocks around the island.
Nine of them, men aged between 32 and 64, failed the breathalyser test and were arrested for drink-driving.
One driver had 85 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath. This is more than twice the prescribed legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath.
Drink drivers, upon conviction, will be disqualified from driving for at least 12 months.
They will lose their driving licences, and have to retake and pass the theory and practical driving tests in order to obtain their driving licences again.
First-time offenders can be fined between S$1,000 and S$5,000.
Repeat offenders may be punished with a maximum fine of S$30,000 and a mandatory jail term of up to three years.
They may also be given six strokes of the cane if death or serious injury is caused. - CNA/nd
