"In the early days, Lim Kim San and Goh Keng Swee worked night and day, and they were truly dedicated. I don’t know whether Lee Kuan Yew will agree but it started going downhill when we started to raise ministers’ salaries, not even pegging them to the national salary but aligning them with the top 10" - Retired Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Ngiam Tong Dow.

All the same,u retired then dare to speak out because the career prospects status and material benefits were too great to give up.555

Politics come and go, but it cannot defeat human nature.

Remember this the next time some PAP dunce brags about having an 'ownself check ownself' system.

It is typical of ex-civil servants to only dare speak out against the govt after they retire. Even if Ngiam Tong Dow wished to criticise LKY and his cronies, Mrs Ngiam would shut him up because of the fear of losing his obscene wages.

The mainstream media in SG is often referred to as the Govt's mouthpiece. Chua Chin Hon, when he was the Straits Times' bureau chief for the US, claimed that the newspaper's editors were pressured into being pro-govt and make sure that reporting of local events meets with the approval of our politicians. Former editor-in-chief, Cheong Yip Seng, claimed that ST has govt-appointed monitors to watch over the newsroom; disapproval from them usually resulted in journalists and editors losing their livelihood. Editors were warned that certain topics were not permissible for public discussion. They only grew balls after they retired.

Human nature is to protect one's own rice bowl.
"When you raise ministers’ salaries to the point that they’re earning millions of dollar, every minister - no matter how much he wants to turn up and tell Hsien Loong off or whatever - will hesitate when he thinks of his million-dollar salary. Even if he wants to do it, his wife will stop him." - Retired Permanent Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Ngiam Tong Dow.

This is understandable, every man for himself and his family (wife).

ultimate reward for sinkie ministars is at least a $69m gcb with a private driveway surrounded by wealth.
