Isetan (Singapore) more than doubles losses in Q3

The department store operator's third straight quarter of red ink comes as Singapore retailers continue to be hit by rising costs and poor sales, with FJ Benjamin and Metro also recording losses earlier this month.

SINGAPORE: Department store operator Isetan (Singapore) reported on Friday (13 Nov) a third straight quarter of red ink, hurt by lower sales at most of its stores.

Isetan incurred a loss after tax of S$6.15 million in the three months ended September, more than double the loss of S$2.93 million in the same period a year ago. The loss for the third quarter was also higher than the loss of S$5.85 million reported for the second quarter. Sales for the three months was S$68.71 million, a drop of 14 per cent from a year ago.

Isetan said the ceasing of retail operations at Isetan Orchard at Wisma Atria at the end of March 2015 contributed to the lower sales.

"With the exception of Isetan Jurong East which is still experiencing growth in sales, the other stores had lower sales," it said in a statement.

Isetan's other stores are located at the junction of Scotts and Orchard Road, Katong, Serangoon Central and Tampines.

Singapore retailers have been hit by rising costs and poor sales. FJ Benjamin, whose brands include Gap and Guess, reported a net loss of S$5.47 million for the quarter earlier this week, while retailer and property developer Metro Holdings said its retail division recorded an operating loss of S$2.1 million.

"Moving forward, the slower economic growth may impact sales and the trading environment is expected to remain very competitive among retailers," Isetan said.

It's just that department stores now have stiffer competitors in uniglo, Zara and H&M and others to Paul smith etc. one uniglo branch probably makes as much as one isetan department store.

All non-food retailers would definitely see a decline in sales and or profits yearly due to online shopping and increasing rentals, so what else is new?

all oil rig builders & ST Marine (cannot bribe now...) will bite the dust

Knew someone who used to work in the hotels & sales retail line, she switched to an office job about 15+ years ago because they weren't paying her enough.

With rentals so high in Spore I doubt that the pay situation has improved. Now even office worker are being retrenched.

By the next GE more Sporeans will probably be more willing to listen to what the opposition have to say;)

Hm...provided they increase the allowance for NCMP. We're going to have a House of NCMPs soon, provided SDP, RP and SFP are not involved.

The House of NCMPs, so-called the Lower House, is designed exclusively for toothless opposition members who have their canines removed and neurologically programmed NOT to ask hard questions.

The House of NCMPs are non-confrontational (an euphemism for ball-less-ness), constructive (another euphemism for porlampar) and appeal to the middle-ground voters (who despite their massive appeal are consigned to the lower house).

Don't be silly. In a retail slump, hardest hit will be Malaysians. Nett-nett, it balances out with the F&B boom.

No. They will open a new store in AMK GRC and will name it "Intan".

They will have a joint venture with a China man & under the 'patronage' of the MP there & call the store , YingTan":D before the exit Singapore, they will change the name to 'zhitan'

Looks like I was wrong. Commercial blood is already being spilled & it is starting with the Metro Dept Stotre & not Isetan.

I was visiting City Square Mall & noticed that the Metro store there has has closed for good & this happened so soon after the GE:eek:

I remember when Metro closed all their stores in Spore e.g. Marina, Supreme House,...

Back then I only remember seeing a Metro store in Jakarta. At Taman Angrrek Mall. Then a few years ago they re-opened their stores in Spore. I wonder if they can survive in Spore:confused: Other than Mustaffa & Robinsons I have my doubts about the viability of dept stores in Spore.

The rent at Centrepoint must cost a bomb for Metro. It will be interesting to see if they can sustain that location.

If Robinsons purchased their current location at what was previously called the Hereen, then I would say it was a savvy decision because they will have save $$$ on the rentals. However if they are renting the place then I have my doubts whether even they can survive the coming recession:confused:
