Wiping the smile off CY Leung's face

The Democratic Party has designed rolls of toilet paper bearing the face of Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, and it will be selling them at this year's Lunar New Year fair.
"Toilet paper is an everyday necessity in every household, and we want to bring politics into the household this new year," said Kelvin Lai King-wai, the head of the party's creative media division.
The product - despite its political message - was manufactured in a mainland factory. "That's why we did not dare to reveal the idea before the products arrived safely in Hong Kong," party vice-chairman Lo Kin-hei said.
"Although the factory did not censor the item, it reminded us not to design products that are too politically sensitive next time."
The toilet rolls come in packs of four, priced at HK$68.90 - a reference to the 689 votes Leung garnered in the 2012 election to claim the position of chief executive. They will go on sale at the party's stall in Victoria Park when the fair opens this Saturday.
Mainland tourist takes luggage trolley for ride
A Putonghua-speaking tourist was recently observed - by a South China Morning Post reporter - wheeling a luggage trolley restricted for use within Airport Express stations onto an MTR train at Central.
The man, presumably a mainland visitor, left the train at Causeway Bay station on Friday, taking the trolley with him.
No doubt a long-suffering member of the MTR staff will eventually end up having to take the luggage trolley back to Hong Kong station where it belongs.
It would perhaps be helpful to better inform tourists about Hong Kong's metro etiquette, especially as the city is expecting to receive an annual 100 million visitors within the next 10 years, according to an official estimate announced last week.
Leak has Julian Cheung among the BVI VIPs
The 2.5 million offshore-company documents leaked by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists covers not just members of the Chinese elite, Hong Kong tycoons and politicians, but also people in the entertainment world.
TVB actor Julian Cheung Chi-lam, 42, was among those exposed as holders of offshore accounts. According to the leaked papers, the Triumph in the Skies II actor set up Full Blessing Investment Group on the British Virgin Islands in 2008.
While owning a secret offshore account does not imply that one is engaging in any illegal conduct and Cheung is not obliged to hold himself accountable to the public, the finding suggests the star is more than just a pretty face - he has an eye on managing his wealth, too.
Delayed working-poor allowance aids others
Guess who benefits from the decision to push back the low-income working family allowance until 2015/2016? Other government departments.
The HK$3 billion reserved for the allowance has now been allocated to projects initially rejected by the government's resource-allocation system, a source close to the government has revealed.
All the departments who appealed their rejection had their requests granted, with some reaping big benefits - like the Scout Association and the Red Cross, which will see their subsidies doubled.
After all, the HK$3 billion that was set aside has to be spent.
