That meant that many super tankers and super cargo can pass Singapore (and Indonesia) straight to China.

Yah lah how to go broke. Sell the coastal lands to private investors build hotels and resorts recreations and build bays inlets to sell water fronts properties and special sea lanes for small boats on both sides of the canal enough to pay for the project.
