Chicago (IL) - Everything from music, software, books and even pornography, may soon be the subject of a new four percent Internet download tax in New York, proposed by Governor David Paterson.

The governor's proposal is part of a vision to "close the state's $15 billion budget deficit." However, critics like New York's Conservative Party chairman, Michael Long, say "By taxing it, you're legitimizing it," referring to the pornography industry which some feel could be driven away from the state following such a tax.

Up to twenty additional states have imposed similar taxes on some download content, such as music on iTunes. However, so far this is the first one tax being proposed that is a "generic download tax" for Internet-distributed content.
