Monks conduct rituals in Bishan and Holland Drive
Lianhe Wanbao - 2 hrs 2 mins ago
Monks conducted rituals at both Holland Drive and Bishan Street 13 yesterday to appease the recently deceased at the two places.
In January this year, two women died at Blk 179, Bishan Street 13 after one woman jumped from the 11th floor and landed on another woman on the ground floor.
On 8 October, a man killed himself at the same place by jumping from the flat. The man died in a horrific manner with his body dashed into four separate parts by the walkway railings on the ground floor.
Four deaths also took place at Holland Drive this year, to the discomfort of many residents. Many feel that the spots are eerie and unlucky and some have even been avoiding the spots where the deaths took place.
Bishan resident Mdm Luo (age 72) said, "The man whose body was found in pieces doesn't even stay here. He stayed in Yishun, yet chose to kill himself here. People have been putting offerings at the spot where he died and many are afraid that he is haunting the estate. It's best to have a ritual to appease his spirit."
Coincidentally, the rituals for both estates took place yesterday.
The 40-minute ritual in Bishan involved five Thai monks and was witnessed by many residents who had just got home from work.
In the ritual, the monks poured rice on the ground to create the figure of the deceased man. They then placed offerings and joss paper while they chanted scriptures for the deceased.
The ritual at Holland Drive involved seven monks and lasted two hours. The monks placed offerings at the void deck of Blk 21 and chanted scriptures. They then went around blessing the estate with flowered-water.
Holland Drive resident Mr Liao (71, retiree) expressed relief after the rituals. "I have stayed here for 30 years and this year has been the estate's most unlucky one! The ritual helped me put my heart at ease."
