HOMES made out of steel containers, pegged as "snail homes" have popped up in Wenjiang District of Sichuan in Chengdu province, Western China.

They measure 3 by 6 metres, and cost just 6 yuan (S$1.10) per day to rent.

A report from Chinasmack.com show these container homes, which are made from metal sheets, with the walls made from 5 centimetres of flame-retardant foam. The floors are also tiled, making it a 18 square metre home for residents.

The homes can be customised and also have a convenient water source beside each container. However, there are no mentions of bathroom facilities, electrical power points, or how residents on second or higher floors access their units.

One resident added that it does not get cold inside the container home during the cold season.

Potential residents have two options; rent one unit at 6 yuan per day, or purchase the unit for 10,000 yuan (S$1,900).

Such container homes first appeared in Shenzhen, and are also known to be resistant to earthquakes. The idea for this form of cheap housing is targeted towards migrants who just moved to China and who are unable to afford housing in the bustling city area.

I think great idea for the migrant workers. They are clean, with proper insulation.
