Mahalingam Gerald - Financial Consultant cum PA trainer for the Peoples' Association (Case #41)
Pacific Western University is a degree mill.
References:
... http://diplomamillnews.blogspot.sg/2...niversity.html
http://www.consumerfraudreporting.or...ccreddited.php
He has no right to call himself "Dr".
His other qualifications are not shown on his LinkedIn page. Why?
Despite getting his phD from a degree mill in 1996 and using it to get employed for years, till now none of his employers have figured it out. The Peoples' Association is also clueless and felt that it is appropriate to hire him as a registered trainer.
When even a statutory board like the Peoples' Association which has several Ministers on its board of management cannot distinguish between a degree from a degree mill and a degree from a credible university, how do you expect employers to be able to do so?
Some say that many of the individuals we have exposed have got their jobs based on their work experiences. This argument is moot because they had to first try their luck and find a company with lazy HR to get employed. Then they can try again at another company, citing their experience. Work experience is easily obtained, provided that the fake degree can fool at least a few companies beforehand.

Former PAP MP: I was tricked into agreeing to be the guest of honour for a degree mill's graduation ceremony
In 2008, Mr Chan Soo Sen, a PAP MP for Joo Chiat SMC and Minister of State for Education, was the guest of honour at the graduating ceremony of West Coast University, a Panama-based degree mill. To mark the occasion, he delivered a speech in English and Mandarin. He was unaware that the graduates had worthless degrees and that the university was actually the Singapore ...branch of a degree mill.
The original news report was copied and pasted here by someone on this forum thread: http://www.sammyboy.com/showthread.php…
After it was revealed that the university was a sham, Mr Chan Soo Sen wrote to the press, saying that he had been duped into attending the ceremony by a grassroots leader. (Source: http://news.asiaone.com/…/…/Story/A1Story20081024-95916.html).
The degree mill problem has existed since 2008 and it seems that little has been done since then to keep track on degree mills and their 'graduates'.
It is indeed a sad day for Singapore when a Minister of State for Education does not know which schools are real and which are simply degree mills.

Most of the cases we unearthed on this page were found by searching LinkedIn profiles. As of now, there are 40 cases of individuals in Singapore using dubious qualifications to secure jobs and some of them have managed to be employed in jobs that pay at least $10k a month.
The limitation of our search is that there are many who may be using a degree from a degree mill but did not set up a LinkedIn profile. What we have exposed on this page is merely a small fraction of the a...ctual number of people using fake qualifications.
If you are surprised that there can be as many as 40-50 cases of people using dodgy degrees to secure employment in Singapore, then be prepared for the worst. What we have exposed is only scratching the surface of the problem.
For all you know, perhaps your own clueless colleague at work may have no real qualifications except for a shoddy degree from a degree mill in his homeland. Let's be vigilant.

"Dr" Timothy Nam, the General Manager of UnitedHealthcare Group has a doctorate from Commonwealth Open University which is a known degree mill.
His phD was obtained in a short span of 3 years and since 2004, he has changed jobs 4 times.
Here is a revelation about this 'university' from a news website:
... "To show how easy it would be to get a degree from Commonwealth Open University, I submitted an application claiming to be a history teacher with 15 years experience seeking a doctorate.
Without requiring transcripts or proof of work, Commonwealth accepted me into its Ph.D. program. I was told all I needed to complete was a 50-page report, and of course, pay. I didn't enroll, but they made it seem like a piece of cake.
Compare that to a doctorate from a recognized accredited university, which usually takes more than eight years and cost an average of $39,700 in 2008, according to the Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics."

Other references:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...gher_education
http://www.foreigncredits.com/resour...-universities/
He did not show his other qualifications on his LinkedIn profile. If this doctorate which is practically bought by him is the highest qualification which he has, then I shudder to think what his other qualifications might be.
UnitedHealthcare Group should do a check and verify if his other qualifications are legitimate. One thing for sure, he is no "Dr".

This screenshot shows how the page for Marc Jonet on Ngee Ann Polytechnic's website looked like in 2012. As early as 2012, Ngee Ann Polytechnic was unaware that their lecturer Marc Jonet's masters' degree and phD were from a degree mill. Nevertheless, after netizens exposed Marc Jonet, Ngee Ann Poly corrected the information about the lecturer on their website. Now fewer people will be misinformed about his credentials when he speaks at seminars. Credit to netizens and Ngee Ann Poly for taking action.

A honest sharing about the dangers of hiring fake talents by edmwer bullfrog:
"In my previous company had one unix engineer from india who knew nuts about writing shell scripts. He hardly knew anything about unix too. Always on the phone talking to someone to get solutions to simple tasks assigned to him. We had to keep doing his work for him and often had to clean up his mess. Boss knew about his incompetence but said better to have half a strength than lose the headcount (h...q had frozen hiring)
He eventually resigned as he knew he couldn't cut it. From what i understand, he moved to a bank as an engineer there. No idea what happened to him after that as nobody really cared."
Do you agree with edmwer bullfrog? I for one, can totally relate to what he has said.

Foreign Talent from India, Naveen Polasam has a degree from Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), an unreliable distance-learning university with a very bad reputation in recent years. He just graduated last year and easily managed to get a comfortable job in Singapore with his dubious qualifications.
Located in the state of Mysore, India, KSOU is a distance learning open university.
Founded in 1996, it offers distance or online degree programmes targeted at "working profe...ssionals" who cannot attend full-time or part-time educational courses offered by universities.
In other words, KSOU is a notch below full-time universities in India including the now-famous Mumbai University which IDA employee Nisha Padmanabhan from India attended.
Apart from its low ranking, KSOU is also fraught with problems. In the past years, it has appeared in the news for the wrong reasons.
1. Degrees for Sale
It was subject of an investigative report on how some universities franchised out their degree programmes without controlling the franchisees who then offered these degrees for sale:
http://www.university.careers360.com/…/students-beware-degr…
2. Mass cheating at exams
In 2013, it was implicated in a case of mass cheating and copying at exams held for its programmes at exam centres outside its home state:
http://m.indiatoday.in/…/mass-copying-in-exam…/1/285577.html
3. Financial irregularities and corruption
More recently in Dec 2014, The Hindu reported that the Governor of Karnataka had ordered an inquiry into allegations of financial irregularities, and corruption in appointments to key posts at the University.

A Malaysian foreign "talent", Mohana Vijayan, used a fake MBA degree from "American University of London" to secure a job as a Procurment Director at Jasper Offshore Drilling Pte Ltd.
Even a dog had managed to get an MBA from this university!
For a £4,500 fee — about $7,300 — AUOL would have given management consultant "Peter Smith" an MBA, based on a CV with 15 years of work experience and an undergraduate degree. However, Pete is actually a dog, and his prior employment an...d degree were, obviously, made up.
Pete was accepted for an MBA based on prior experiences, and an AUOL representative told the BBC that the school "awarded him the full degree immediately based on his qualification and his professional experience."
The AUOL is uncredited in England and is listed as a "bogus" university by an Italian organization, although the BBC "found hundreds of senior executives listing AUOL qualifications.

Our fellow edmwer gravity_infinitely has prepared a guide on how one can establish one's career in Singapore with an instant degree from a degree mill. Interested? Then read on!
Instant degree. How to get ahead of the game.
Basically, you have to successfully cheat the first employer and then gain real work experience.
... Steps:
1) buy instant degree or degrees and MBA.
2) mass submit resume until a lazy hr hires you. law of large numbers. (it isn't illegal to submit with instant degree from mills according to government. unacredited is OK.)
3) hit jackpot when a lazy HR hires you.
4) gain real experiences. (never mind if you screw up.. nothing to lose. but everything to gain if you succeed)
5) jump company... (repeat from step 2)
6) when kena exposed.... (you got relevant work experiences)
(play the victim card)
Just tell them u are the victim of degree mill and u dunno that degree u pursued is not recognised.
nothing to lose. everything to gain. faster better and more salary!

If a person buys a degree from these mills, he has no proper training in that particular field which means he will not be able to handle the job well. This is a very dangerous situation and yet our MOM and ICA are still keeping very quiet. Imagine employing a fake architect to design our flats and fake engineers to maintain our rail system or even fake doctors to treat our sick. Is this the future we want for Singapore? Or do we want a system of meritocracy? ‪#‎OperationNisha‬

Mr Ron Sim Chye Hock - Advisory Board member of SMU's Lee Kong Chian School of Business.
However, he has not one but two honorary degrees from degree mills: Wisconsin International University and the University of Hawaii.
Winsconsin International University and University of Hawaii are degree mills as shown by these sources:

Since his honorary degrees are both from fake institutions and therefore worthless, he should not refer to himself as a "Dr" as he has done on several occasions. Furthermore, he should have discarded the title as soon as possible to avoid the bad reputation that comes from accepting a worthless degree.
Moreover, there is no sign of a bachelor's degree listed in these sites about him:

Gopalan Somarajan who is working at Sembcorp Marine Ltd has a degree from Almeda University which is a known degree mill.
According to the Wikipedia page for Almeda University, this is what it says:
Reception[edit]
Almeda's academic standards have been criticized by a variety of education organizations. According to Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning, Almeda College and University is a web-only university that offers degrees based on an assessment of a cand...idate's "life experience". Bear notes that Almeda states that it is accredited by the Association for Online Academic Excellence, but that that association is unrecognized.[9][16]
In 2011, the U.S. News University Directory, operated by U.S. News & World Report, published an article about online education that favorably mentioned Almeda's master's degree program in psychology. Inside Higher Ed reported in June 2011 that the U.S. News website had removed the posting after being alerted that Almeda "is not recognized as a legitimate degree-granting university by the U.S. Department of Education or any mainstream accrediting agency." Website editors stated their commitment to "focus on accredited colleges and universities" and blamed an "editorial oversight" for the site's use of an Almeda press release.[19]
Both his bachelor's degree and master's degree from a degree mill. And yet the HR had no safeguards to ensure that foreigners' qualifications are verified. Here is a link to his LinkedIn profile: https://sg.linkedin.com/in/somarajansingapore

This is the case of "Dr" Terence Seet, originally posted on the fuckwarezone forum. All his degrees are from known and reported degree mills and he does not have any post secondary qualifications and yet he was still able to work as a Director at Raffles Education Corporation.
Angela Tan from Raffles Education replied on fuckwarezone and claimed that Terence Seet had been sacked in 2013 after they found out that all his qualifications were fake. However, according to this ar...ticle (http://www.thehindu.com/features/dow...cle3536537.ece) that was published on March 26, 2014, he was referred to as Terence Seet, Director, Raffles Millennium International, Chennai.
What is Raffles Millenium International?
Raffles Millennium International (RMI) is a Joint Venture between "Raffles Education Corp limited" in Singapore and "Educomp Solutions Limited" in India. Both these entities are publicly listed companies with an excellent track record in education. RMI happens to be one of the best colleges in India as far as education in DESIGN is concerned. - Source: http://rmihyd.com
Was Terence Seet sacked by Raffles Education in 2013? Or was he simply transferred to a subsidiary company where he remained director? It is noteworthy that he only removed his linkedin profile and all videos of himself after he was exposed on EDMW.

From wikipedia: Belford University was an organization that offered online unaccredited degrees for "life experience". The organization maintained a post office box in Humble, Texas, but its certificates were mailed from the United Arab Emirates.[1] On August 31, 2012, Belford University was shut down and its founder, Salem Kureshi, had been “ordered to pay $22.7 million in damages”.[2] “The judgment established the truth of allegations that Belford High School and Belford University are fake schools that do not actually exist.”[3] Court documents from "McClusley v. Belford University" revealed that Belford University was run by 30-year old Salem Kureshi from his apartment in Karachi, Pakistan.
She probably knew that her degree from Philippines would not be enough so she went ahead and got a more 'credible' degree from Belford University online (Ang Moh name, so sounds more credible).
And thereafter she could somehow get a job in Singapore as a Managing Director! How could this happen?

Saminathan Suresh Somasundaram who is working at Standard Chartered Bank
It can be seen that Saminathan Suresh Somasundaram is a Malaysian who completed his secondary school education at Seaport Secondary School in Malaysia. He then proceeded to get a fake bachelor's degree from Southern Pacific University which is the same degree mill that Nisha from IDA got her master's degree from. In Saminathan's case, it is even worse because he was hired despite having a bogus bachelor'...s degree. He has no other tertiary qualification.
Without even a real bachelor's degree and any post-secondary qualifications, all he really has are his secondary school qualifications. How on earth is a person with only secondary school qualifications a foreign talent? Furthermore, since he only has secondary school qualifications, how could Standard Chartered Bank employ him as a Business Analyst? This implies that qualifications are not necessary to get a job at Standard Chartered Bank.

This India FT has a degree from Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), a distance learning university that has received a lot of bad publicity. And she's working in the HR department, can you believe it? Will she be hiring fellow foreigners with dubious degrees instead of qualified Singaporeans?
Located in the state of Mysore, India, KSOU is a distance learning open university. Founded in 1996, it offers distance or online degree programmes targeted at "working professional...s" who cannot attend full-time or part-time educational courses offered by universities.
It was subject of an investigative report on how some universities franchised out their degree programmes without controlling the franchisees who then offered these degrees for sale:
http://www.university.careers360.com...grees-for-sale
2. Mass cheating at exams
In 2013, it was implicated in a case of mass cheating and copying at exams held for its programmes at exam centres outside its home state:
http://m.indiatoday.in/story/mass-co.../1/285577.html
3. Financial irregularities and corruption
More recently in Dec 2014, The Hindu reported that the Governor of Karnataka had ordered an inquiry into allegations of financial irregularities, and corruption in appointments to key posts at the University.

KSOU appears to be the university of choice for many PMETs from India working in Singapore.

Ramses Butarbutar, an Indonesian working in SG has a degree from Preston University, a degree mill operating out of Pakistan.
Here are the reasons why Preston University is a degree mill.
Firstly, Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston...(United_States) states this:
... "Preston University is a private for-profit unaccredited institution that offers a variety of academic degree programs bydistance learning. Preston was originally based in Wyoming and in 2007 was based in Alabama. As of 2012, Preston identified Los Angeles, California as its base of operations.[1][2][3]
Preston University is owned by Abdul Basit, who lives in Pakistan.[4]
About 30 affiliated campuses throughout the world were listed by Preston.[5] A number of degree programs ranging from associate to Ph.D. in a variety of disciplines were offered.[6] As of August 2012, the Oregon Office of Degree Authorizationreported that the university was operated from Pakistan, had formerly operated in Wyoming and Alabama in the United States, had recently started "selling degrees from" the U.S. state of California, had been active in Nepal in 2009, also had a presence in Dubai, and used several different institutional names in several world regions"
Next, if we dig a bit further, there was a Straits Times article which listed Preston University among others as a degree mill. The Straits Times refused to back down when Preston University objected to being labelled as a degree mill. (Source: http://news.asiaone.com/News/Educati...906-86167.html). Preston is also on a list of universities listed as degree mills: https://peoplecheck.co.kr:442/resources/down/list01.pdf. Malaysia's news website also reported that it was a degree mill (http://www.thestar.com.my/story/?fil...ocus%2F4575051).
Lastly, even Pakistan where Preston University is based also classified Preston University as a degree mill (http://educationmalaysia.blogspot.sg...rsities-i.html).
This site refers to Preston university as a fraud university with a history of fake degrees! (http://theprestonuniversityfraud.blogspot.sg/)
When there is abundant information to show that Preston University is a degree mill, why is foreign 'talent' from such dodgy universities still being hired in Singapore?
