A 39-year-old man on board a Resorts World "Genting Dream" cruise with his parents in 2023 allegedly lost about S$2,000 after gambling at the casino on the ship.

Upset, he later attempted to recover the money by sending multiple bomb threats to the cruise company, which caused a two-hour delay for the onboarding of the next batch of passengers.

Now 41, he has been charged and may face a jail term.

Threatening emails

According to charge sheets, the man, Neo Hui Ghim, faces three charges for a total of four threatening emails he made towards the cruise company, Resorts World Cruises (RWC).

"Die in hell"

One of the charges pertained to an email he sent to a staff member on Aug. 6, 2023, about a month after he had booked the tickets.

"If didn’t reply us all casino team member die in hell. If using cut and paste wording and crated text and set me also die in hell," he said in the email.

For his "threatening, abusive or insulting" words, Neo faces up to six months' imprisonment, up to S$5,000 fine or both.

Bomb threats

The other charges pertained to three more emails Neo later sent after disembarking the cruise ship on the last day, Oct. 13, 2023.

While on an MRT train, he felt upset about the money he had lost from gambling, as well as a concert he was unable to catch on the cruise.

Court documents showed that he had originally booked the cruise with the intent of watching a concert that was happening onboard, but was told after embarking on Oct. 11 that the tickets were sold out.

Neo's unhappiness at both losses resulted in him crafting another threatening email to RWC's Member Booking branch.

"If I don't receive the money I hope that one day Resorts World Cruises will explode and all guests and service personnel will drop into the sea," he wrote.

He added: "Next time, if I lose again I'll make sure the whole cruise is burnt."

Less than half an hour later, he sent yet another email to the customer service branch of RWC with the subject "Bomb at Resorts World Cruises".

"Please return me back my monies else the ship will explode and everyone dropped into the sea. Next time when I cruise again and happen to lose money [I'll] ensure the entire cruise ship explode," he said.

This email was forwarded four times to the customer service branch.

For the false threats made in these two emails, Neo faces up to seven years' imprisonment, a fine of up to S$50,000, or both.

Sent 4th email

Slightly more than an hour later, Neo sent a fourth email to a staff at the Member Booking branch.

"Hi Jane, Your cruise will be burnt down," the email said.

Court documents stated that Neo attempted to recall all the emails soon after, but did not know how.

He then deleted all but one from his phone.

For threatening the staff member in the last email, Neo faces up to six months' imprisonment, up to S$5,000 in fines, or both.

Delays

Neo's actions were reported to the police by a staff at RWC.

As police officers conducted checks to determine if Neo had left the cruise, and whether the ship was safe to board, about 4,000 passengers from the next batch of passengers were delayed from boarding by about two hours.

Neo was arrested in the evening of the same day and evaluated at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).

He was identified as the person behind the bomb threats as the same email address was used to send the threats and make the cruise booking.

He has since been on bail and will be sentenced on Oct. 27.
