'No evidence prices in stalls operated by PRs are higher.'
MR SILACHART LAU, head (licensing, tenancy & admin), hawkers department, National Environment Agency: 'We refer to Mr Shahul Hameed's letter on Monday ('Price of subletting food stalls to PRs'). The tendering process for vacant hawker stalls is open and transparent to the public and stalls are let out to the most competitive bid. The process helps to ensure that only individuals who are genuinely interested and have the necessary skills consider joining the hawker trade. Citizens and permanent residents (PRs) can bid for vacant stalls. Stallholders paying tendered rents may sublet their stalls to citizens and PRs at a mutually agreed fee. This is a private arrangement between the stallholder and the sub-tenant. There is no evidence to suggest that the food prices in stalls operated by PRs are higher, as food prices are ultimately determined by market forces. Furthermore, the public could benefit from the longer operating hours of sublet hawker stalls.'

This Sala-Chart cartoon shot himself with that last sentence "..the public could benefit from the longer operating hours of sublet hawker stalls.".

He is confirming a fact that PRs running the sublet stalls have to work harder and longer to pay the High Sublet Rentals to the main stallholder; These PRs are not stupid and pass the buck to Singaporeans thru HIGHER PRICES AND SUB-STANDARD INGREDIENTS, so that they need not work so hard anymore....

So wat use is the lame "...food prices are ultimately determined by market forces" excuse anymore????

These PAP ball suckers better cum up with better excuses next time, esp. after getting their 8.8% pay raise recently....
