The rhythm of the waves is fairly constant and can be predicted. My guess is that the snipers compensated for that.

At 20 to 30 yards behind (less than 28m), you do not really need to compensate for distance (or as in moving target during your M16 5.56mm range) as the speed of the 7.62mm projectile over such short distances is split second :)

The only issue is on the squeezing of trigger as in when ;)
 
they have special laser-guided weapons.
