Navy man on cheating charge

A REPUBLIC of Singapore Navy second warrant officer claimed trial on Friday to cheating a man of a $50,000 loan. Low Aik Khoon, 45, allegedly deceived Mr Kuo Fen Ching into believing that he would use the money to invest in a pub when he in fact used it to settle his debts. The alleged offence took place at a flat in Cairnhill on May 2, 2001. Mr Kuo, the boss of a marine services company, came to know Low through work when his company became a contractor of Mindef in 2000. Low, who is represented by Mr Ong Cheong Wei, is out on bail of $10,000. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Jan 8. If convicted, he faces a jail term ofo up to seven years and/or a fine.
