Nanyang Polytechnic alumni’s bank details leaked in system hack
Yahoo Newsroom – 6 hours ago
Bank details of some 240 ex-Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) students have been stolen after hackers broke into the Singapore school’s database, according to media reports.
An NYP spokesperson told Channel NewsAsia that bank account numbers for GIRO payment of school fees were leaked, along with admission numbers and names, of alumni enrolled from 1994 to 1999.
The Yio Chu Kang-based polytechnic notified the affected individuals on 5 February, explaining there was “unauthorised access” to its system on 14 January via “a security loophole in one of the programmes”.
It said it conducted an internal investigation the following day before making a police report.
The Straits Times further reported that the personal information made its way to an unknown website, which NYP has since deleted.
The school also announced that it has conducted a vulnerability scan of its systems and patched the loophole.
“No other systems have been compromised. We have also checked through our internal system logs and determined that this was the only data that was leaked," it added.
NYP is now said to be working with a forensics firm to conduct an independent investigation with a view to strengthening its processes and systems.
