You could also make the argument that the traits of the government rub off on the citizens, like parents influencing their children.

All governments, by default, work against the well-being of their people. That's why it is necessary to have systemic checks and balances. Think of the government as a dog, it needs to be trained, leashed and occasionally muzzled. Done properly, it becomes an asset. Otherwise it becomes a nuisance.

No need to look at HK and Myanmar, take baby steps and first try reaching the bravery of those across the Causeway.
