Mutts are now called 'Designer' Dogs?

THEY used to be labelled mongrels and mutts - dogs nobody wanted unless it is out of pity. Many of such puppies ended up abandoned at animal shelters, or worse, in the wild.

But these days, the demand for mixed-breed dogs is growing and they are pitched to customers under the label 'designer' dogs.

There are also fanciful names coined so these new-fangled cross-breeds sound more prestigious: there is the goldendoodle (golden retriever and poodle), the peki-pom (pekingese and pomeranian), the jack-chi (jack russell terrier and chihuahua), the papshund (papillon and dachshund) and even the cavatzu (cavalier king charles spaniel and shih tzu).
