<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I STRONGLY endorse Mr Chan Chi Yung's letter yesterday, 'Cluttered walkways at malls pose danger'.
Popular Mustafa Centre in Little India has extremely narrow aisles throughout its six levels of shopping space, posing a significant fire hazard. One wonders how it has managed to pass fire inspections.
To compound matters, the entire length of the five-foot way outside this hypermart is crammed with stalls, tables and chairs, all of which would prevent rapid evacuation of the premises and deployment of fire-fighting equipment.

You may not even have the space to BREATHE.

That said, you would not find this 'fire safety', 'crowdedness' and 'personal hygiene' issues up on the heads and minds of our beloved leaders. Why?

'cause they need all of us to support their hefty paychecks. And funds for Temasek to utilise. And GIC to pump into foreign entities. And big bonuses for transport companies and their CEOs. And more cars for the ERP and carpark gantries to *beep*.

Crowded walkways? Unable to move freely? Shoving and pushing? No worries...government will just open a few biddings, ask for a few vendors, build some extended shelters, enlong some walkways, expand some footpaths.

Now I don't even want to go to our (in)famous Orchard Road,or any other shopping centres, like Bugis, Somerset or Tiong Bahru, that may agitate my 'breathing difficulty’ anymore. Even waiting for bus at the meeny-teeny bus-stop is one hell of a painful experience, and especially so when it rains. MRT is getting from bad to worse, with more people and fewer seats made available. Buying a car maybe a pleasant experience; driving it on the road is oh-so-not. Strolling through a shopping centre is good; try getting a seat for food at any foodcourt on a weekend.

Singapore sure is going from good to better. Long live Singaporeans!
