A 26-year-old asylum seeker from Mali was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa Airport after he poured gasoline onto counters in the check-in area and set the facility on fire, causing an evacuation and substantial damage.

Bystanders and CCTV captured the surreal situation, which eventually resulted in security forces taking the screaming offender into custody, with the counters smoldering in the background.

For some reason, there are more and more incidents recently where people go nuts at airports in Europe, and more often than not, they don’t even appear to be ticketed passengers but rather random vagrants, just like in this case, where the offender is a 26-year-old “asylum seeker” from Mali.

At least someone got him good and took him down with the full brunt of a fire extinguisher.

There is quite a lot of smoke in the terminal:

People were fleeing in a panic, especially with the huge fire in full blaze.

Other news reports, including Polymarket Intelligence, offered a description of the criminal:
This is in line with similar incidents that were previously updated to social media, including someone with a similar profile attacking airport check-in counters in Spain.

I honestly don’t know what’s going on in Europe anymore. All I can say is that I’m probably spoiled after almost two decades in Asia, where public safety is really a primary perk of living here.

When I visited Rome this April I was rather shocked how it has deteriorated, especially in areas such as Rome Termini Station with plenty of shady characters around.

Going into Barcelona and Frankfurt wasn’t much better, let alone using public transportation at either destination.

Security at European Airports really has to be improved, including controlling who has access to the terminal itself. Maybe expand that to railway stations as well. I think the Netherlands do a great job controlling access and keeping their train stations clean.

This is a serious incident that could have resulted in serious injuries or worse. Hopefully the authorities will pursue terrorism charges against this offender.

Conclusion

A 26-year-old man who is reportedly an “asylum seeker” from Mali caused panic at Milan’s Malpensa Airport when he set fire to the check-in area and then took a hammer to smash airport information screens.

Hopefully, all the passengers were able to leave the area without injury and loss or damage to their property. This caused quite a few delays as the departure hall had to be evacuated due to the firefighting efforts and the fumes.

Perhaps airports and public railway stations should install entry gate security checkpoints to scan for suspicious individuals, particularly those without a valid reason for being there, such as being a ticketed passenger or someone picking someone up.

A vagrant with a hammer and gasoline would almost certainly be picked up by security, and this would prevent such situations. I also don’t see a lot (well, any) law enforcement around in the video. The people who took the offender down are passengers and airport employees. Usually, there is a lot of security in Italy, and the police are well armed.
