I used to almost cry as a kid listening to this, it would come on the radio and I'd think of my mum leaving and the water works would start.

In 1972 I was 9 years old. The first time I heard this song my dad was leaving for his 3rd deployment to Vietnam. I imagined my dad leaving and not coming home. I thought of my mom leaving myself and my two younger brothers. I remember crying so hard I couldn't catch my breath. My mom hugged me and promised she'd stay with me forever.
