KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian police on Sunday (Oct 2) arrested nine Australian men at the Malaysian Grand Prix in Sepang for wearing underwear with Malaysia's national flag imprinted on them.
Sepang police chief Abdul Aziz Ali said the men, aged 25 to 29, were arrested at about 5pm on Sunday and will be remanded for four days.
"They are tourists who visited Malaysia to watch the F1 race,” he said. "Early investigations showed that they bought the underwear in Australia.”
Abdul Aziz said the men are being investigated under Section 504 which is to intentionally disrupt peace, as well under Section 14, which covers indecent behaviour at a public place.
A photo of the men wearing their briefs with the flag went viral online, prompting anger. Online users urged the government to take action.
