SMRT bus catches fire on BKE

AN SMRT bus caught fire along the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) on Sunday morning.
Bus 187 was on its way to Woodlands Interchange from Boon Lay when the driver noticed smoke coming from the engine. He proceeded to call for help and evacuated the 15 passengers from the bus. The passengers were transferred to another bus.
The SCDF put out the flames in 10 minutes. Only the empty shell of the bus remained after the fire was put out. There were no casualties.
A commuter who was travelling along the BKE recorded a video of the burning bus and sent it to STOMP. He said that explosion noises could be heard and that the 'heat from the blaze was unbearably hot'.
A SMRT spokesman said that the bus could have caught fire due to a faulty engine and added that SMRT was working closely with the police to assist in investigations.
The incident comes a week after 7 people were injured in a collision between an SBS bus and a tour bus.
