A section of a westbound MRT train’s undercarriage caught fire while the train was travelling. Passengers had to be evacuated at Kembangan MRT station. Fortunately, the fire was extinguished in time with no casualties and no delays to the train schedule.
This incident happened at around 7pm on 8th October. About 700 passengers were made to alight at Kembangan MRT.
Mr Sun (hanyu pinyin, 23 yrs old) was one of those in the train when the incident occurred. According to him, when the train was about to arrive at Kembangan, he heard the message broadcast over the PA system in the train that a breakdown had occurred, and passengers were to alight at the next stop.
Mr Sun said that after he alighted, he noticed that fumes were emitting from a section of the undercarriage. He also smelt burning but did not see any flames.
Mr Sun said that all the passengers were calm and the situation was not chaotic.
“SMRT officers announced that passengers could take the next westbound train. Everyone followed instructions and there was no squeezing,” Mr Sun added.
Mr Sun said that the next train arrived 4 minutes after the affected train had left the station. Passengers got onto the train and continued their journeys.
An SMRT spokesman confirmed that a section of the undercarriage of a westbound MRT train had suddenly caught fire at around 7pm on 8th October.
The fire was caused by an overheated plastic part in the undercarriage.
SMRT officers had promptly requested passengers to alight after the train had arrived at Kembangan MRT station, and had extinguished the fire with extinguishers.
The affected train was sent for inspection and had not posed any danger to passengers.
A similar incident had occurred at Tanah Merah MRT station on 26th July 2010 at 9:20pm, when the undercarriage of an MRT train had emitted noises and sparks. That was likely caused by a loose metal part in the undercarriage contacting the current-carrying rail tracks. At that time, SMRT had also requested passengers to alight due to safety considerations and so that thorough checks could be carried out.

Is Mat Selamat or that Swiss graffiti fellow on the loose?

MRT and buses are smelly and hot. Made to pay air-con prices for a non-aircon ride. I prefer we go back to the non air-con era.

"The fire was caused by an overheated plastic part in the undercarriage."

So it will happen again?!
