MRT faults: Real action needed

Letter from Prem Singh
04:46 AM Oct 26, 2011

Too many things have gone wrong this year with our Mass Rapid Transit system.

Commuters' daily frustrations include: Train doors not being able to close smoothly, resulting in time wastage; train frequency during peak hours; and failure to be promptly advised of problems affecting train arrivals.

For instance, my daughter and I were at Bedok MRT Station on Thursday morning but there were no westbound trains for about 10 minutes. We left the station and took a cab.

Before leaving, I approached a staff member and learnt that "yes, there's a problem somewhere", but she was unable to elaborate.

So-called "technical faults" have resulted in trains being taken off service and commuters having to alight. There is a need for real action to correct the faults and not just to monitor frequencies and efficiency. The time for monitoring is over.

Maybe it is time to ask that a Government committee, comprising a spectrum of knowledgeable individuals, be set up to actually look into the feasibility of nationalising our public transport.

After all, SMRT Corporation has failed even in the aspect of securing trains at the "protected" train depots.
