My best calculations are that MPs earn $900 per hour. Sure, they call it an allowance, but let's face it, its a salary with pension and all the other benefits. An allowance connotes a temporary and arbitrary arrangement, and MPs getting $15K a month cannot be remotely contrued to be getting allowances.
My calculations:
MP MPS = 1 hour per week X 52 weeks = 52 hours.
Time actually spend dealing with constituency matters (Approx) = 2 hours per week X 52 week = 104 hours. Note too that MPs have a staff to assist them, so 2 hours I think is accurate.
Time spend in Parliament when the house is in session = 44 hours.
Total time spend a year = 52 + 104 + 44 = 200 hours.
Salary = 15,000 X12 = $180,000 divide by 200 hours = $900 per hour
In addition, many MPs have profitable full time careers like Dr. Lim Wee Kiak, and I am sure their total compensation per hour works out to much more than a minister.
Minister calculations:
Minister works 50 hours a week, (I am sure some will work more, especially if they hold more than portfolio) X 52 weeks = 2600 hours per year.
Minister base salary is around $1.5 million divide by 2600 hours = $577 per hour.
On an hourly basis, MP earn far more than ministers. Since Gerard wants to peg their pay to the private sector in the professional areas like lawyers, drs. etc., well, all these professions are also essentially billing by the hour. So, Mr. Ee, LOOK THE FUCK AT MP SALARIES TOO!
