A MOTORCYCLIST was fined $9,000 on Wednesday and barred from driving any vehicle for five years for causing the death of a 71-year-old cyclist in early 2010.
A district court heard that Low Wee Beng, 24, was riding home when he rear-ended the bicycle of Mr Eang Ching Young at about 5pm on Jan 9. Also known as Mr Ng Chwee Whuat, the retiree suffered multiple injuries and died in Tan Tock Seng Hospital the next day.
Investigations revealed that Low had tried to overtake a bus on its left. The bus was then travelling along the extreme left lane of Kallang Bahru and he did not see Mr Eang riding in front of him between the kerb and the bus.
The motorcycle smashed into the bicycle injuring the cyclist seriously. Deputy Public Prosecutor Bhajanvir Singh said that had Low had also exceeded the speed limit.
Defence counsel Mervyn Tan had argued against the driving disqualification as his client needed a driving licence to continue working as a driver for a towing company.
