The 39-year-old blogger has announced her intention to appeal her conviction. At the same time, she publicly apologized to “anyone who felt offended” by her comment posted on Facebook. “This verdict is very harsh. It sends us back years,” denounced Bouazza Karim, the brother of Fatema Karim. In Morocco, anyone who violates the Muslim religion is likely to receive a sentence ranging from six months to two years in prison. A possible penalty of extending to five years in prison if the offense is committed in public, even online. Any attack “on the monarchical regime” is also punished by the kingdom.
