More youths spotting tattoos
SINGAPORE : More youths are spotting tattoos and many are also regretting their decisions.
According to the National Skin Centre, some 30 people seek help each year with tattoo removal - the youngest just 11-years-old.
The centre feels regulation of the industry is needed to protect children.
It said it costs more to remove a tattoo and low income families are usually shocked by the amount needed.
A $100 design may cost $500 to remove it over seven treatments.
Over the past five years, an average of 30 people have sought tattoo removal treatments each year.
The National Skin Centre said this could be due to more youngsters going for tattoos, as a result of peer pressure or rebellion.
Doctors said there is also a certain amount of risk involved when getting a tattoo.
Singapore reported two Hepatitis B cases linked to tattooing in the 1970s.
Dr Chua Sze Hon, senior consultant dermatologist at the National Skin Centre said "Tattooing is in fact a very invasive process. If tattoos are not done properly - using sterile equipment - there is definitely a risk of infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C being transmitted, and severe scarring.
"Customers at the younger age group tend to go for basically cheap tattoos and we're not quite sure how sterile or how clean these tattoo parlours are. So perhaps, they are at higher risk of acquiring infections when they get their tattoos done in so-called unlicensed parlour." - CNA /ls/fa
