More young Singaporeans are in debt, with growing number defaulting on loans: Report

The authorities claim that the proportion of S'poreans who are employed or looking for work has been on a steady decline, mainly because older workers make up a larger share of residents. This sounds like a poor excuse for foreigners displacing locals in the workforce, with the older locals considered retired or no longer interested in working when they cannot find jobs.

Incurring debt to make money or acquiring appreciating assets is ok. But owing money to buy luxury goods and cars to show off is pure stupidity and suicidal.

I’ve been in a tight spot before and what helped me avoid digging a deeper hole was slowing down before taking any new loan and tracking every tiny expense, even the kopi runs. I am still overwhelmed by the 1% GST increase in 2023, followed by another 1% hike in 2024. Coupled with the rising inflation rates in 2025 and the anticipated increases in 2026, I feel utterly exhausted. I've made an estimated calculation based on the increase, which comes to approximately $200 per month on household spending. It may seem insignificant to those with high SES, but not to those with lower SES like me.
