More than 800 retired policemen seek constitutional remedy on pensions
Thursday, 25th February 2010 - 18:09CET

A total of 842 retired policemen have filed an application against the Prime Minister, the Attorney General and the Social Services director claiming they were not receiving the pensions they were entitled to.

They asked the court for a constitutional remedy to start receiving the monies they were entitled to in full.

The former policemen, who are members of the Police Pensioners’ Association, said that while they were in the force they paid their social security contributions, entitling them to all benefits under the Social Security Act, including a pension. The Police Act entitled them to another pension after 25 years of service.

But, they said, they were only getting their Police Pension and the difference between this pension and the Social Security pension they were entitled to.

This, they said, was in breach of their fundamental human rights.
