More than 1,300 police officers deployed in crackdown on fraud in central Chinese city

Public security bureau sends phalanx of officers, hundreds of cars and dog teams to round up suspects in Zhumadian city, Henan province, state media reports

Police carried out a large sweep against criminals engaged in fraud in Zhumadian city in the central province of Henan, deploying more than 1,300 officers in the operation, state media reported.

Military uniforms were also seized, suggesting the suspects may have posed as army officers as part of their alleged deception.

Forty people were taken into custody, including 13 thought to belong to four different gangs, according to China National Radio.

The suspects hailed from Shangcai county, the epicentre of a blood donation and transfusion scandal in the late 1990s that saw hundreds of villagers infected with HIV.

In the sweep carried out earlier this month, Zhumadian’s public security bureau sent more than 1,300 officers, some 300 police cars and 10 police dogs to escort 10 suspects back to their homes as for searches as part of the investigation.

Two army uniforms, two police uniforms and three knifes were seized, together with 22 bank cards, four bank books and some cash, according to China National Radio.
