Photos circulating online show the young victim, before he was mauled to death, cowering in a corner of the enclosure at New Delhi Zoo in India as the endangered white tiger stands over him.
Just how the 22-year-old man, identified as Maqsood, ended up inside the enclosure earlier today has been a matter of dispute.
The zoo said the man climbed over a railing and jumped into a deep concrete ditch at about 1pm, despite efforts by zoo security to stop him, whereas eyewitnesses told Indian Express the man lost his balance and fell into the enclosure while trying to throw stones at the tiger.
Some reports said the man appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, while his father later said he had mental health problems.
