There are more people with tertiary education behind bars – not just in prison, but drug rehabilitation centres too.
The annual statistics report of the Singapore Prisons Service released yesterday shows that out of the 9,901 convicted inmates last year, 295 inmates had tertiary education.
In 2010, there were 282 inmates with tertiary education, while it was 258 in 2011.
One counsellor, who declined to be named, said offences by these tertiary-educated inmates tend to be financial in nature and are not of the violent kind, while lawyers said the rise of white-collar crimes could be why more graduates are ending up behind bars.
