More Government is not always better Government, and greater social spending does not automatically mean better results, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday.

The United States, for instance, spends 18 per cent of GDP on healthcare, which is four times more than Singapore's, but has lower life expectancy and higher infant mortality rates.

PM Lee also cited how the European model of welfare, with governments making up half or more of the economy, is in "serious trouble".

So even as Singapore strengthens social safety nets, the ultimate test of success is not how much the Government does or spends, but the programmes' outcomes, he said at a dinner to mark St Andrew's Mission Hospital (SAMH)'s centenary.

I think we have one of the best government's model in the world.

Our healthcare scheme is among the best in the world.

58.1 When the government is unobtrusive, the people are sincere and honest.

When the government is invasive and scrutinizing, the disappointed People will resort to treachery.

Chapter Fifty-Eight of the Tao Te Ching ....

The government that seems the most unwise,
Oft goodness to the people best supplies;
That which is meddling, touching everything,
Will work but ill, and disappointment bring.

Misery!--happiness is to be found by its side! Happiness!--misery
lurks beneath it! Who knows what either will come to in the end?

Shall we then dispense with correction? The (method of) correction
shall by a turn become distortion, and the good in it shall by a turn
become evil. The delusion of the people (on this point) has indeed
subsisted for a long time.

Therefore the sage is (like) a square which cuts no one (with its
angles); (like) a corner which injures no one (with its sharpness).
He is straightforward, but allows himself no license; he is bright,
but does not dazzle.

LHL shows his ignorance. What a dumb ass. He can't get his facts right.

He cited the healthcare expense in US. Does he not know that health care in US is privatized? That's why it is so expensive. So, he just provide the rationale why health care should be a publicly funded instead of letting the free market exploit the sick.

On the European model of welfare, he doesn't dare to get into specific countries because there are countries that are in good shape. In Scandinavian countries, people are happy with the social safety net and are gladly paying their share in taxes to fund those other expensive programmes which are now affordable because of the role of government.

He is most highly paid leader but he is just another dumb wick.

i hope u dont get seriously ill
then u yearn to die rather than pay the hospital bill

Why? You are just singing the right-wing bs.

Just so PAP ...leaning on history, selective ones.

The US has the best healthcare in the world ...only the rich can access the best.

You, being a PAP sycophant, enjoy the best on the cheap while we, ordinary sinkees, have to pay through the nose for the same treatment. What lah?
