SINGAPORE: A 32-year-old man who lodged a police report about being the victim of a snatch theft is now being investigated himself for allegedly providing false information.

In a news release on Sunday (Nov 6), the police said the suspect lodged a police report at around 7.25pm on Friday claiming that an unknown man had snatched his pouch containing an unknown amount of coins and a SIM card before fleeing from Block 142, Bukit Batok Street 11.

However, investigating police officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division found many inconsistencies in his account and subsequently established that the man who filed the report had provided false information.

According to the police, investigations against the man are ongoing. If convicted, he could be jailed for up to a year, or fined up to S$5,000, or both.

In its media statement, police reminded the public that its resources "could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating false reports or false information.

“Those who lodge false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.”
