Earlier news article is so misleading, say that 2.1 millions will get savings.

If 3 adults in one household each got a $100 U-save letter, it means only $100 saving for the household but on paper it is as if all 3 adult got savings.

Is this how they get the 2.1 millions figure?

About 2.1 million Singaporeans will be receiving cash handouts, utility rebates and Medisave top-ups in the next two months, under a new GST voucher scheme for lower-income families that is to become a permanent feature of Singapore?s social system.

A $3.6 billion fund will be set up to pay for this new GST Voucher scheme over the next five years until 2016, of which $680 million will be spent for this year alone.

Letters will be sent out from Monday onwards to inform individuals of the exact amount they will receive this year.
Background story

Eligible Singaporeans who have not signed up for a previous Government payout (such as the 2011 Growth Dividend or 2007-2010 GST Credits) will have to sign up by July 18 to receive their payout on Aug 1. They can do so via the following channels:

- Online: www.gstvoucher.gov.sg (sign up by July 18); or

- Physical sign-up form: Available at any Community Centre, Community Development Council or CPF Service Centre (sign up by July 16).

Those who sign up after July 18 will receive their payout after Aug 1. They have up to Dec 31 to sign up for their 2012 GSTV payout.

The scheme, first announced during the Budget debate in February, is meant to help low-income families offset higher costs due to the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Singaporeans who qualify are adults in the bottom 40 per cent income bracket and who live in HDB flats or private property with an annual value of up to $20,000.

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) clarified on Thursday that each Singaporean household can only make use of one utilities rebate, which is part of the GST Voucher scheme.

'The amount of GSTV-U Save rebates depends on the flat type, and not the size of the household,' the ministry stated in a press release.

The U-Save is a component of the GSTV plan, which was introduced in February this year to help lower- and middle-income households with living expenses. The new GSTV scheme also comprises of the GSTV-Cash and GSTV-Medisave, both of which are paid out on an individual basis to eligible Singaporeans.

The GSTV- U Save rebate is given out to all HDB households to help offset monthly utilities bills. Ranging between $180-$260 a year, the rebate will benefit those living in one and two-room flats most. The utilities rebate will be handed out starting this month, and will be given out in January and July each year.

Total $680m given out this year.
Pink IC population about 2.5m.
So average per person $680m/2.5m = $272 citizen.
Not everyone get it so maybe poor family get $500/person.

You earn more than $25,000 a year - you get a piece of paper that inform you that you get nothing, what a waste of taxpayer's money to inform them they get nothing.

Each mail cost at least $3 for paper, ink, envelope, labour,rental..........................

hi there

1. yes, i received the gst article.
2. pretty confusing & not too clear.
3. now, its explanation via the media is equally messy!

Is that why i don't get $250 while the others in the office got it? How to see the criteria?

So many dont get?
How the PAP gov justify giving out $680?

Each person $250 max.

Even every living SG get max only $680m.
But less than half qualify. So only give out less than $300m talk like very big.
