AFTER reading about the possibility of having an early General Election (GE), my view is that the Government should concentrate on solving the current economic crisis.
It does not need to ask for a mandate because the next GE is due only in 2012, and it has done a great job governing Singapore since 1965. The Government also helped Singaporeans weather the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and most critically, the threat of Sars in 2003.
An early GE to ask for a mandate would be a mistake and a waste of time and resources, which are better channelled towards recovering from the recession.
