Speaking at a dialogue organised by the National University of Singapore (NUS) yesterday (Nov 14), Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam claimed that more Singaporeans support the draconian law, the Internal Security Act (ISA), that gives the government the power to detain anyone indefinitely without trial.
“I believe support for the ISA, if anything, has increased. I think the pendulum on the ISA has swung the other way, in that I think there’s substantial support and the fact that our population is highly educated and very aware of what’s happening and know that any abuse of the Act would immediately lead to consequences by the population.”
According to Minister K Shanmugam, the ISA law allows “preventive” detention, “preventive” subversion and suppression of violence in the name of internal security. Citing references to the recent arrest of ISIS supporters in Singapore, the Law Minister reiterated the necessity to keep the law.
However, there is no mention of the political abuse of ISA, which former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew used to consolidate political power and bringing the ruling party PAP to political dominance since independence.
Law Minister K Shanmugam then commented on the recent Elected Presidency changes, again, reiterating his support for the racist proposal of guaranteed minority representation without meritocracy to allow only the Malay race to contest in the next election:
“The president is a symbol of the state and the nation, and if that symbol is exclusively, say, Chinese, then over time the spirit of multiracialism would be impacted a little bit.”
