Speaking in Parliament during the Budget debate last week (3 Mar), Tanjong Pagar GRC MP Lily Neo acknowledged that Singaporeans are feeling more angst than showing gratitude towards government bodies.

As such, she felt that government agencies need to have effective leadership and send staff for training to gain good communication skills with residents.

Dr Neo said, “The Tanjong Pagar Town Council is sending all its staff for the SQ Customer Management Course to better equip them in serving residents. The Town Council also has a team of service ambassadors on the ground in every estate; their job being to seek out complaints and feedback and act on them proactively.”

“Skills required by staff include being able to listen empathetically, to stand on the side of residents, to find solutions, to solve the problems and to close the loops with satisfactory results. In these times of more angst than gratitude, there is a need to change our handling of residents in terms of expanding communication and improving our engagement strategies. I hope all ministries can adopt and adapt strategies to this new landscape.”

She said as Singapore continues to build its future, there is a need to cater to the higher expectations of Singaporeans who are better-educated and informed. She also highlighted areas where
