The 30+ gunmen were from the Jalisco New Generation cartel (known by its Spanish initials CJNG).

Edited after Rogue Trader mentioned the gore tactics of the Los Zetas cartel :
The Los Zetas are indeed infamous for being one of the most cruel and violent drug cartels in Mexico, routinely torturing, dismembering (alive), disembowelling (alive), skinning (alive), burning (alive), beheading (alive), etc tens to hundreds of thousands of victims (over the years), not just members from rival drug cartels, but also their girlfriends, family members, and countless innocent victims being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Joselyn Niño was a notorious assassin for the Gulf Cartel and first gained notoriety for posting a photo on social media of herself sweetly smiling while holding a modified M4 assault rifle. The image quickly went viral. She went on to boast about her bloody achievements online until she was murdered by another Skinny Girl, La Gladys of the Zetas. In 2015, the body of Niño was discovered hacked to pieces and stuffed into an ice cooler on the US-Mexico border. A photo was released online of Niño lying dead in the cooler next to a man and woman before she was dismembered. A second photo of her butchered body in the cooler showed a tattoo which read: ‘Nino’, the same as the one seen on her right forearm.

Here's some of the gore that Rogue Trader was referring to, just a small sample of the countless (likely hundreds of thousands of victims) over the years that the Los Zetas and other cartels are notorious for. The following 3 videos are likely done by the Los Zetas, but possibly by another drug cartel.
Video of a (tied up) man getting his legs hacked off while still alive and fully conscious.

Video of a (tied up) woman getting her head slowly sliced off (ie. beheading) while still alive and fully conscious.

Video of a (tied up) man getting his heart cut out while still alive and fully conscious.

Mexican cartel leader who dismembered (ie. chopped off the arms and legs) of a 6 year old little girl while she was alive (and fully conscious) jailed for life
