In HK and Taiwan and even China govt give the old a pension based on their own financial status not their children and for HK old folks nursing home is free. The parents maintenance act that forceal singaporeans to pay for their parents is UNIQUE to singapore and does not exists anywhere else in the world. Parents are required to care for children because they choose to have children but never the other way round because it would mean a sandwitched generation will have double burden of caring for children and parents -this is too heavy for the poorer pple. In singapore the govt has pushed this responaibility of caring for the old so that it can use the money to give scholarship to foreigners. Only singaporeans s_tupid enough to fall for the govt filial piety argument which is an excuse for the PAP to dump its responsibility to the old. The economics of it doesn't add up. For all we know Joseph Tay might have lost his job or his child got seriously ill medical bill are high in singapore so he cannot to pay. The PAP itself is heartless to make so many aged work until such an old age.
