The hapless tweeter asked for "a spliff" to be delivered to his work in Toronto while he finished his shift.

Fancy a spliff at work? Don't tweet it

A mechanic in Canada has been fired after tweeting a request for marijuana - which was spotted by police.

The hapless social media user asked for "a spliff or two" to be delivered to his work in Toronto while he finished his shift.

York police retweeted his message and joked: "Awesome! Can we come too?"

The profile was deleted, but not before another message was posted: "My tweets are NOT serious by any means".

That was not enough for the mechanic's employers - oil-change shop Mr Lube - from firing the offender.

Mr Lube thanked the police, tweeting: "Thank you to the York Regional Police for your help and great work. The matter has now been handled."

York police's tweet has quickly become a top tweet - and has been retweeted nearly 5,000 times.

But some Twitter users were not amused, with one saying: "Don't you guys have some actual crime to stop?"

The police responded: "If you shouted on a busy street corner about illegal activity & we drove by, we’d intervene. Think of Twitter as a virtual street corner.

"A reminder to our tweeps: the Internet is a public forum #tweetsafe #tweetclassy #imagineyourmamareadingit."
