Mazda plans Building Cars In Russian Far East
MOSCOW (Nikkei)--Mazda Motor Corp. (7261) officials have discussed the possibility of auto production in Russia's Far East region with Gov. Sergei Darkin, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Friday.
According to the local government, Mazda is considering constructing a new plant or making use of an existing facility.
The Japanese automaker has been carrying out market research in Russia and looking into possibly setting up a plant, with an eye toward making a full-scale entry into the nation's promising auto market.
The Russian government has been showing interest in developing its Far East region with the help of Japan. It has been inviting Japanese automakers to set up plants in the region.
In a meeting with Nissan President Carlos Ghosn last year, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin asked Nissan Motor Co. (7201) to manufacture automobiles in the Russian Far East.
